Q: What is whey protein?

Whey protein is a protein made from milk. It's the liquid that separates out when milk is made into cheese, which is then filtered and dried into a powder.

Q: What is the difference between WPI and WPC?

Whey protein isolate (WPI) is filtered further than whey protein concentrate (WPC), so it usually has more protein and less lactose and fat per serve. WPC is usually lower cost.

Q: What is hydrolysed whey?

Hydrolysed whey, or HWPI, is whey protein that has been partly broken down during processing. It usually has a high protein content, similar to WPI.

Q: What is a whey protein blend?

A whey protein blend mixes whey protein concentrate and isolate, and sometimes other proteins, in one powder. Blends are popular everyday options with a wide range of flavours.

Q: Which whey protein should I choose?

Choose WPI if you want more protein and less lactose per serve, WPC or a blend for everyday value, or hydrolysed whey if you prefer a partly broken down whey. Compare protein and cost per serve on the label.

Q: Is whey protein suitable if I'm lactose sensitive?

Many people who are sensitive to lactose choose whey protein isolate or hydrolysed whey, which are lower in lactose than WPC. Some products also include added lactase. Check the label, or choose a plant-based protein if you avoid dairy.

Q: When should I have whey protein?

Most people have whey protein after training or between meals to help reach their daily protein target. Follow the directions on the label.

Q: Can I mix whey protein with milk?

Yes. Whey can be mixed with water for fewer calories, or with milk for a thicker, creamier shake with extra protein and calories.

Q: How much protein is in a scoop of whey?

It depends on the product and type, but most whey protein powders provide around 20g to 30g of protein per scoop. Check the nutrition panel for the exact amount.

Q: Is whey protein the same as protein powder?

Whey is one type of protein powder. Other types include plant-based protein, casein and collagen protein.

What Is Whey Protein?

Whey protein is a protein made from milk. When milk is made into cheese, the liquid that separates out is whey, which is then filtered and dried into a powder. Whey protein powder is the most popular type of protein powder, and it's easy to mix with water or milk to help you reach your daily protein target.

At Nutrition Warehouse, we stock over 160 whey protein powders from Genetix Nutrition, Optimum Nutrition, Rule 1 Proteins, Anabolix Nutrition, EHP Labs and more. WPI vs WPC vs Hydrolysed Whey vs Whey Blends

All whey protein starts as whey, but it's filtered and processed in different ways. Here's how the four types compare:

Type	Protein content	Lactose and fat	Example
Whey protein concentrate (WPC)	Usually around 70% to 80%	Contains some lactose and fat	Pure Whey by Genetix Nutrition
Whey protein isolate (WPI)	Usually around 90% or more	Filtered to remove more lactose and fat	Lean WPI by Genetix Nutrition
Hydrolysed whey (HWPI)	Usually high, similar to WPI	Whey that has been partly broken down	Isolate (Hydrolysed WPI) by Anabolix Nutrition
Whey protein blends	Varies by blend	A mix of WPC and WPI, sometimes with other proteins	Gold Standard 100% Whey by Optimum Nutrition

Protein content varies by product, so always check the nutrition panel for protein, carbs, fat and sugar per serve.

How to Choose the Right Whey Protein

Type: choose WPI if you want more protein and less lactose per serve, WPC or a blend for everyday value, or hydrolysed whey if you want a whey that has been partly broken down.
Protein per serve: compare the grams of protein per scoop on the nutrition panel.
Lactose: if you're sensitive to lactose, look at WPI, hydrolysed whey or products with added lactase.
Flavour: most whey powders come in a wide range of flavours, so pick one you'll enjoy every day.
Value: compare cost per serve, as larger bags and tubs usually cost less per serve.

How to Use Whey Protein Powder

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Most people mix one scoop of whey with water or milk in a protein shaker, and have it after training or between meals. Whey can also be added to smoothies, oats, pancakes and baking. Whey protein is not a sole source of nutrition and should be used alongside a balanced diet.
