Myth 7 - Fat Makes You Fat

Reading time - 2 mins

It seems to make sense to a lot of people that eating fat would make you fat. However, it turns out that it isn’t that simple. Despite fat having more calories per gram than protein or carbohydrates, diets that are higher in fat and lower in carbohydrates are often best for fat loss.

There is a caveat… A diet that is high in carbohydrates and simultaneously high in fat may increase the chance of weight gain, so be sure to keep your carbohydrates lower when you increase your fat intake.

Correct dietary fat consumption may help to boost HSL (Hormone Sensitive Lipase). This enzyme is responsible for telling your body to burn more fat and supports the control of your appetite.

Bottom Line

Eating fat does not automatically lead to fat (weight) gain. In fact, higher fat and lower carbohydrate diets have been shown to reduce bodyfat. Because fats are essential and provide a large amount of fat soluble nutrients it is more important to look at consuming better quality fats rather than lowering them. Also, be sure to keep your carbohydrates lower if you have a higher fat intake.
