Q What is the best source of vitamin D?
A Sunshine is the best source of vitamin D. When the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, vitamin D is formed from cholesterol in the skin, and absorbed into the circulatory system. Dietary sources of vitamin D include eggs, butter, fish livers or oil, sprouted seeds and fortified foods. However, generally people are unable to gain adequate intake from diet alone, therefore sunshine and or supplementation is recommended.
Q Who is at risk of having a vitamin D deficiency?
A Older people in nursing homes, or who are house bound are at a particularly high risk of vitamin D deficiency. There is also prevalence of mild vitamin D deficiency in younger adults, particularly during winter. The more pigment there is in the skin, the less vitamin D is produced, so those with dark skin, as well as those who avoid the sun or women who wear veils, are at a greater risk of deficiency.
Q What is osteoporosis and what are the risk factors for developing it?
A Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased risk of fractures
Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
– Female gender (especially small stature)
– Family history of osteoporosis
– Menopause
– Advanced age
– Vitamin D deficiency
– Low calcium intake
– Cigarette smoking
– Excessive intake of alcohol or coffee
Q How does Vitamin D support calcium absorption?
A Vitamin D provides the specific carrier needed to transport calcium across the gut and stimulate the
intestine to increase the absorption of phosphorus.
Q Why is Selenium, Vitamin E and Boron included in this formulation?
A Selenium assists the formation of bone and absorption of vitamin D, and together with vitamin E, are needed to create an antioxidant called glutathione which is associated with healthy bone density. Boron helps to improve the development and maintenance of bone tissue and activate vitamin D through its action in the kidney
Boron deficiency is linked to arthritis, poor growth, increase in calcium loss and inhibited bone development.
