Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid produced in the body from the metabolism of phenylalanine. It is also found in foods including soybeans, chicken, fish, almonds, avocados, bananas, dairy products, eggs, nuts, beans, oats, wheats, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, yoghurt and miso1.
Tyrosine is formed by skin cells into melanin, the dark pigment that protects against the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. Thyroid hormones, which have a role in almost every process in the body, also contain tyrosine as part of their structure.
Low levels of tyrosine is associated with changes in mood, low thyroid function, cold hands and feet and low body temperature.
