Frequently asked questions

Q What is osteoporosis and how is it best prevented?

A Strong, healthy bones are essential for an active lifestyle; but without the right nutrients in the right amounts, bones can end up growing weaker and losing density. Over time, this can result in osteoporosis – a disease in which bones become porous and brittle, breaking more easily, and taking longer to heal if damaged. Osteoporosis is increasingly common, affecting as many as 1 in 2 NZ women and nearly 1 in 3 NZ men over 60.1 The best way to prevent it is to start building bone density as early possible, by ensuring sufficient calcium and Vitamin D intake, and regular weight bearing exercise to strengthen bones. After menopause, bone mass can decline quite significantly due to the lowered levels of oestrogen (bone-protective hormone).

Q What are the main risk factors for osteoporosis?

A Risk factors include being female (especially post menopausal or of small build), a family history of osteoporosis, advanced age, low calcium intake, low vitamin D levels, cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol or coffee intake.

Q Why is it important to start building bone mass early?

A The body reaches its peak bone mass at around age 30, so it is important for both men and women to build as much bone mass as possible before this age. After this, the rate of bone loss begins to exceed that of bone building, which results in gradual net bone loss over time. Poor nutrition in early life (before this peak) can reduce the levels of bone mass at the peak, thus increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis later on in life.

Q What is the RDI for calcium?

A The Australian Department of Health and Aging Guidelines recommend the following daily calcium intake to maintain bone health:

   Age  Calcium RDI (mg)
 Men  19-70  1000mg
 Men  71+  1300mg
 Women  19-50  1000mg
 Women  51+  1300mg
 Pregnant & Breastfeeding  14-18  1300mg
 Pregnant & Breastfeeding  19-50  100mg

Q Why is calcium recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

A During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the calcium in a mother’s body helps to not only maintain her bone mass, but also build her baby’s skeleton and teeth. Unless she consumes adequate dietary calcium over this time, she may experience bone mass losses as calcium leaches from her bones to support her baby’s growth.

Q How does Nutra-Life Super Calcium Complete Gold support total bone health?

A Each Nutra-Life Super Calcium Complete Gold tablet provides 274mg of elemental calcium in two well absorbed forms: Calcium citrate and Hydroxyapatite.

Super Calcium Complete Gold provides nearly twice the amount of Hydroxyapatite of original Super Calcium Complete for even better calcium absorption. This is supported by 250 IU of Vitamin D3, which assists Calcium absorption; plus Vitamin K and Magnesium to help maintain optimum bone strength; and Horsetail herb, Zinc, Manganese and Boron, which each help to support bone structure.

Q Why is the form of Calcium in a supplement important?

A The key to bone health is not just in how much calcium is consumed, but how much is absorbed. Hydroxyapatite and Calcium citrate are both highly absorbable calcium forms.

Hydroxyapatite is a form of calcium naturally present in bone, so the body needs to do little to it in order to absorb and use it. Its superior absorption is associated with the many unique nutrients naturally found in the natural bone matrix. These include special proteins such as collagen, amino acids and chondroitin. Calcium citrate has also been clinically shown to be significantly better absorbed2 than calcium carbonate (a common form of calcium in supplements) in people with low stomach acid.
