Medically diagnosed Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia also referred to as BPH affects more than 50% of men in their lifetime, with incidence increasing with age. The condition is characterised by hyperplasia of prostatic cells, resulting in the formation of large, fairly discrete nodules in the prostate region. When large enough, the nodules compress causing obstruction of the urethra, interfering with normal urine flow. BPH is considered to be an androgen dependant (testosterone and related hormones) disorder of metabolism. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent androgen derived from testosterone by the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, is a critical mediator of prostatic growth. Rising DHT levels are associated with increasing levels of 5-alpha-reductase which is believed to be a contributing factor to BPH Benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms include hesitancy, intermittency, incomplete voiding, weak urinary stream, and straining, frequency of urination, and urgency.
