Many experts suggest staying away from choosing an outcome for your goal. They say it's better to aim for performance, where you have more control over how it develops.

For example, choosing victory in a sporting event is not recommended because you don't have any control how well-prepared your competitors will be. So instead of saying your goal is to win the next contest, pick a goal that includes body measurements, for instance. One example would be to say that your goal is to go into the next competition with 5 more pounds of lean body mass and 5 percent less bodyfat than you had at last year's competition.

Tips:

•  State your goal in a positive way.

•  Be precise about how you state your goal.

•  Challenge yourself, but be realistic.

•  Choose performance-oriented goals, as opposed to outcome-oriented goals.

•  Select a goal that is easily measured.

Create a Fitness Mission Statement

Companies use business mission statements to help themselves with their goals. A personal-fitness mission statement is designed for the same reason. Creating your own fitness mission statement enables you to think about how to effectively pursue your fitness goal. It's like a kind of mantra; you can repeat it to yourself for motivation and to keep yourself on track and focused.

You may even find it helpful to have it written down in key places, such as on the refrigerator or on your desk. The real key to a good mission statement is creating one that really inspires you. Here are three fitness mission statement examples to give you an idea how you can create your own.

1. I have chosen a healthy, active lifestyle, and I believe nothing can stop me from achieving my fitness goal.

2. In pursuit of my athletic goal, I will give my full devotion, interest, and enthusiasm to succeed.

3. I will meet my weight-loss goal through daily, consistent exercise and good nutrition.

Set Short-Term and Long-Term Goals

You may find it helpful to include short-term goals or objectives leading toward your main long-term goal. Having short- and even medium-range targets can help you stay on track and keep you focused. Your main long-term goal can be daunting at times, so breaking that goal down into smaller, more attainable objectives can make the task seem easier. And as you attain each short-term goal, you can gain confidence, getting the ball rolling toward ultimately reaching your big long-term goal!

Keeping an organizer is a great way to lay out and keep track of your goals either on paper or computer

Once you have determined your specific fitness goal and your intermediate objectives, you will want to draw out a plan of attack on paper or on your computer. Laying out your fitness goal and a road map to that fitness goal in writing is a great visual way to help yourself stay organized, focused, and feeling in control. Putting it in writing makes the fitness goal more formal and something you may wish to take more seriously.

Set a Deadline

A deadline will force you to use your time wisely. Without a goal date, it can be easy to put things off, telling yourself you'll get it done later. Setting a deadline will also allow you to more effectively structure your goal into a systematic fitness plan that's easier to follow.

Use a Visual Checklist

Remember how excited you got in elementary school when your teacher put a star up on a chart for every piece of work you successfully completed? Do the same now for every workout you successfully complete and every scheduled meal you stay true to.

Feed Your Motivation

Motivation is always in a state of flux. It's either increasing or decreasing. We want to feed motivation so it's always increasing. To do this, you need to provide yourself with a flow of steady incentive. Surround yourself with the positive emotional support of friends, family, work colleagues, coaches, and teammates. Occasional sincere pats on the back from your emotional-support crew can do a lot to keep you on track towards your fitness goal. Staying consistent with your exercise and diet is another way to feed your motivation. It's like getting the fitness ball rolling where it can gain momentum. Just be sure not to overdo it. You don't want to overtrain or “overdiet.” That's one of the best ways to lose motivation.

Has this Helped Me?

Athletes know the importance of goal-setting to reach fitness objectives. Questioning yourself after every workout, meal, or related task can force you to follow through on the task with a good effort. After every workout, ask yourself, “Has this helped me?” Be honest. If you can truly say you've benefited from your workout, mark it down as a step toward your fitness goal. Go to the gym or start exercising, knowing that you're going to ask yourself this question. That way you're encouraged to make a more concerted effort during each workout.

Reward Yourself

Everyone enjoys receiving rewards. Looking forward to a reward is one of the most powerful motivators. Give yourself a reward for each successful step you make toward your fitness goal. And, of course, give yourself a large reward when you meet your final fitness goal. You've worked hard for it. It's time to celebrate your success!

Whether you’re a superstar athlete or someone trying to build a stronger, fitter body as part of a healthier lifestyle, these simple steps can help you set your own personal fitness goal. Striving for a formal fitness goal has many benefits. Along with gaining a higher level of fitness, those who strive for their planned goals are more focused, have less stress, perform better, and find greater overall satisfaction with their results. Don’t you think it’s time to add goal-setting to your fitness regimen?
