Naturopathic Information:
Menopause is a normal event in the life of a woman, it signals the end of her fertile/reproductive phase of her life. The ovaries which normally produce female hormones, almost completely stop producing progesterone and two out of the three oestrogen hormones: oestradiol and oestriol.
Hot flushes and night sweats are a symptom of hormonal changes occurring in menopause, as oestrogen is typically lowest at night, some women get night sweats without having any hot flashes during the daytime.
Naturopaths use herbal remedies to assist the body to adapt to the new hormonal levels by reducing the effects of oestrogen withdrawal. In addition, lifestyle changes may help as well. These include avoiding caffeine, hot drinks, chocolate, spicy or hot foods and alcohol. A healthy diet high in vegetables and rich in soy foods with regular exercise and yoga may help control the body's response to the stresses that can lead to hot flashes.
